LEARN MORE

As some of you may be aware, there have been some cases of Canine Influenza in our area. The virus is spread through aerosolized droplets, nose to nose contact, and less likely, on surfaces. Shelters, grooming salons, doggy day care, dog parks, horse and dog shows, training classes, pet stores, plane travel, vet visits, and boarding facilities could all be sources of infection. Dogs become ill within 2-5 days of exposure and are contagious before showing symptoms.

Symptoms may include: fever, coughing, nasal discharge, runny eyes, lethargy, sneezing, and decreased appetite. Short faced dogs like Pugs or Bulldogs and dogs with current respiratory problems may be more affected.

If you observe signs of the canine flu in you dog, please call the office. Most dogs do not need to be seen but will require nursing care at home, (rest, and make sure they are eating and drinking). Dogs may cough for up to 3 weeks and the quarantine period is 21 days.

Some dogs may be severely affected and require treatment. Pneumonia occurs in 10-20% of the cases.

Vaccinating at risk dogs should be considered.

Please don’t hesitate to call us at 540-364-4954 if you have any questions or concerns.
